The current Official Opposition is the caucus of the Conservative Party, assuming the role following its loss of power in the 2015 federal election. The Opposition was led by Pierre Poilievre, who became Conservative leader following the 2022 leadership election, until 2025.

Canada is described as a "full democracy", with a tradition of secular liberalism, and an egalitarian, moderate political ideology. Extremism has never been prominent in Canadian politics. The traditional "brokerage" model of Canadian politics leaves little room for ideology.
